SpaceX Targets Pecan Island for Third US Launch Site

SpaceX is planning to build a new launch facility along an 18-mile stretch of coastal south Louisiana known as Pecan Island, a source close to the deal confirmed. The move would give the company a third domestic launch site alongside its existing operations in Texas and Florida.

The confirmation follows months of speculation about SpaceX expanding its domestic launch infrastructure beyond its current locations. The company operates Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas, and launches from Cape Canaveral in Florida.

The Pecan Island location covers approximately 18 miles of coastline in south Louisiana. As of August 2, 2026, the plan has been confirmed by a source close to the deal. If completed, the facility would become SpaceX's third domestic launch site.

A third launch site would increase SpaceX's launch cadence capacity and reduce single-point-of-failure risk from weather or regulatory holds at any one location. Louisiana's Gulf Coast geography also opens different orbital inclination options. The plan represents a significant economic and political development for a state that has been aggressively courting aerospace investment. A third launch site would give SpaceX a level of operational redundancy that no other launch provider currently has.
