The decision reflects a gap between the retirement of legacy systems and the arrival of their successors, a gap the service is now managing directly.

The satellites in question belong to the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program, a constellation that is well past its designed operational life. The transition to a new replacement architecture is underway but not yet complete, leaving the Space Force reliant on decades-old hardware to sustain critical weather data.

Military weather satellites feed a wide range of defense operations, including flight planning, missile guidance, and naval operations. The extended reliance on the DMSP fleet means the service must continue operating spacecraft that have already exceeded the lifespan they were built for. The longer the legacy fleet remains in service, the higher the risk that a single hardware failure could interrupt the flow of data with no backup in place.
