NASA Adds Three SpaceX Crew Missions in $946 Million Contract Expansion

NASA has awarded SpaceX three additional crew flights to the International Space Station through a contract modification valued at $946 million. The change raises SpaceX's total assignments under the agency's Commercial Crew Transportation Capability contract to 17 missions and helps NASA maintain access to the station with two commercial crew partners.
The award follows a notice of intent NASA issued in May to purchase the additional missions. The current sole source modification does not preclude NASA from seeking future contract modifications for additional transportation services as needed.
The modification is a firm fixed-price, indefinite-delivery and indefinite-quantity arrangement covering the Crew-15, Crew-16, and Crew-17 missions. The $946 million value includes ground, launch, in-orbit, and return and recovery operations, cargo transportation for each mission, and a lifeboat capability while docked to the station. The period of performance runs through 2030 and brings the total CCtCap contract value with SpaceX to $5.92 billion.
NASA awarded the CCtCap contracts to Boeing and SpaceX in 2014 through a public-private partnership as part of the agency's Commercial Crew Program. Under CCtCap, NASA certifies that a provider's space transportation system meets agency requirements before flying missions with astronauts. SpaceX was certified for crew transportation in November 2020.
The company's twelfth crew rotation mission for the agency, Crew-12, is currently in orbit docked to the station. On each mission, SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket transport up to four astronauts, along with critical cargo, to the station.
The added flights allow NASA to continue regular crew transportation to the International Space Station while sustaining access through two unique commercial crew industry partners.
The three new missions run through 2030 under the extended period of performance. NASA has stated it may pursue further contract modifications for additional transportation services if required.
