MDA Space Launches Defence Variant of Aurora Software-Defined Satellite

MDA Space has introduced MDA Aurora Black, a defence-focused extension of its Aurora software-defined satellite product line built to deliver secure and resilient communications for government and military customers. The company announced the product on September 10, 2026, positioning it to address military satellite communications requirements in contested environments.

The new product builds on the existing Aurora line's flexibility, scalability and performance features, adding layers of protection against cyber, physical and other evolving threats. MDA Space describes Aurora Black as a response to growing international demand for sovereign and resilient space-based defence communications infrastructure.

Aurora Black adds a secure end-to-end connection, onboard anti-jamming capabilities, resistance to GPS spoofing, and perimeter and proximity sensing. The company says these features offer elevated mission assurance in contested environments and help maintain the integrity of space-based operations. The product is available across the Aurora direct-to-device and broadband product lines.

Mike Greenley, CEO of MDA Space, said defence organizations are operating in increasingly complex and contested environments where connectivity is mission-critical and threats to it are real. He said Aurora Black is designed to bring the agility of the company's software-defined satellite into the defence domain, helping countries maintain tactical and strategic communications essential to data-centric operations. Greenley added that high-volume production will ensure defence departments globally can achieve near-term, secure, sovereign military satellite communications.

Nathan de Ruiter, Senior Partner at consulting and market intelligence firm Novaspace, said sovereign, defence-specific SATCOM capabilities are a core part of modern military operations, and that defence-optimized capabilities like those Aurora Black offers will be critical to securing assured command and control as governments increase investment. He cited Novaspace research showing that in 2023, 107 proprietary defence satellites were launched globally, with more than 40 billion US dollars of government space defence and security expenditures contracted to industry.

According to de Ruiter, companies bringing sovereign, secure, high-volume satellite solutions to market are well positioned to meet this demand. MDA Space frames Aurora Black as intended to help defence departments achieve secure, sovereign military satellite communications in the near term.
