The Indian Space Research Organisation will launch EOS-05, India's first Earth observation satellite designed for Geosynchronous Orbit, from the Second Launch Pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. Liftoff is scheduled for September 4, 2026, at 2:55 a.m. IST. If injected successfully, the satellite will give India continuous, real-time viewing of a fixed region rather than the periodic snapshots captured by satellites in lower orbits.
While ISRO has launched imaging satellites before, this is the first such spacecraft intended for the high-altitude GEO orbit. The mission also marks ISRO's return to the launchpad after the PSLV-C62 / EOS-N1 mission, which launched on January 12, 2026, but encountered a critical anomaly during the final moments of the third-stage burn. That flight failed to achieve orbit, resulting in the loss of the 16 satellites onboard.
The launch will be carried out by the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle. This is the 19th mission for the three-stage rocket, which has recorded 12 successes, 4 failures, and 2 partial failures. EOS-05 will be lifted on the GSLV-F17 configuration.
Because a GEO satellite matches the Earth's rotation, EOS-05 will remain positioned over the same region continuously. The satellite is intended to monitor critical assets such as remote borders and conflict zones around the clock, functioning as what ISRO describes as India's eye in the sky. Its capability set also extends to disaster zone coverage and agricultural monitoring.
The distinction from ISRO's existing lower-orbit imaging fleet is a fundamental one. Rather than passing over a target and capturing multiple snapshots as it moves, EOS-05 will provide constant stare coverage of a single fixed area, enabling round-the-clock surveillance that lower-orbit satellites cannot replicate.
A successful mission would give India a persistent overhead intelligence asset. Given the GSLV's troubled record, including multiple failures, the launch is regarded as a credibility test for the program.
The next milestone is the scheduled September 4 liftoff at 2:55 a.m. IST from Sriharikota and the successful injection of EOS-05 into Geosynchronous Orbit.
