Germany's Isar Aerospace reached orbit on Saturday on the second flight of its Spectrum launch vehicle, deploying five satellites and marking the first time a commercial company has reached orbit from Western European soil. The success, on a mission named "Onward and Upward," gives European commercial and institutional customers a homegrown launch option.
Spectrum's debut flight failed shortly after liftoff in March 2025. The second flight went through several scrubbed attempts this year, including a leaking pressure vessel in the spring, before Saturday's success. Europe's only other operational orbital rockets, excluding Russia's, are Ariane 6 and Vega C, both run by Arianespace and flown from French Guiana in South America.
The two-stage rocket lifted off from Andøya Space in northern Norway just after 10 p.m. local time. Isar Aerospace confirmed it passed maximum dynamic pressure, stage separation, second-stage engine ignition, fairing separation, orbit, and second engine cutoff with transfer orbit injection. The company was founded in 2018 near Munich.
Andøya suits polar orbits well but not lower-inclination ones, because a rocket generally cannot reach an orbit tilted lower than its own launch latitude without burning extra fuel on a costly plane change. To address this, Isar is building a dedicated Spectrum launch complex at Spaceport Nova Scotia in Canada, under a 10-year deal worth roughly 155 million dollars (112.5 million US dollars) with Maritime Launch Services signed in July. The launch pad there would let Spectrum fly east over open water into lower-inclination orbits, chief engineer Nikolaos Perakis said during a livestream of Saturday's launch. Isar and Maritime Launch pushed back a deadline to finalize the remaining details of the agreement from September 1 to September 15. The first launch from Spaceport Nova Scotia is targeting sometime in 2028.
Isar is also planning to launch from the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana, which operates under a dual-partnership framework shared between the French National Center for Space Studies and the European Space Agency. The company says it has five more Spectrum rockets already in production and is building a factory meant to turn out up to 40 vehicles a year.
"Launch continues to be the largest bottleneck for the global space industry, and from today on, there is a true alternative for commercial and institutional customers," said Daniel Metzler, the co-founder and chief executive of Isar Aerospace. Metzler asked the company to be judged on its ramp-up, promising at least five more flights by early 2028.
The next milestones center on cadence. Isar has committed to at least five more Spectrum flights by early 2028, is targeting its first launch from Spaceport Nova Scotia that same year, and faces a September 15 deadline to finalize the remaining details of its agreement with Maritime Launch Services.
