Shots Fired at Brownsville Commissioner's Home Days After SpaceX Land Vote

Police in Brownsville, Texas, are investigating a shooting outside the home of a city commissioner early Saturday, September 5, an incident that followed rising political tensions over a controversial land deal with Elon Musk's SpaceX. No injuries were reported. Mayor John Cowen called the shooting "deeply troubling."

The Brownsville Police Department said in a statement that it is investigating a "shots fired incident" that occurred in front of a city commissioner's residence. Police did not say whether the crime was suspected of being politically motivated, and added that investigators are working to determine the circumstances and identify suspects.

The shooting came days after a unanimous vote by the Brownsville City Commission on August 29 for the disannexation of more than 444 acres of land at the request of SpaceX, which operates a rocket production, research and launch center named Starbase near Boca Chica Beach, outside Brownsville. The land, within city limits but not city-owned, is privately held by 48 families and trusts and would be purchased by SpaceX, Cowen said.

The deal was made in exchange for $220 million from SpaceX for water infrastructure that Cowen said is critical for the future water supply of a city that relies on Rio Grande reservoirs. The vote took place during a tense, six-hour special meeting on August 29, with SpaceX pushing that there would be no deal if it was not approved that Saturday because of company timelines, The Brownsville Herald reported. Opponents of the deal expressed concerns over SpaceX's environmental impact, political influence, and what they described as bullying tactics, the paper reported.

Cowen condemned the shooting in a statement posted to his Facebook page. "Political intimidation and violence, real or attempted, have no place in Brownsville. Our elected officials, city staff, and every resident deserve to feel safe in their own homes, regardless of political disagreements," he said. He acknowledged political tensions in the border city in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas.

The mayor's statement frames the shooting as a matter of political intimidation and public safety, stressing that residents and officials should feel secure at home despite disagreements over city decisions.

Police said investigators are working to determine the circumstances of the shooting and identify suspects.
