AnySignal and Andrenam announced a partnership on October 9 to develop and market a new family of underwater acoustic communications modems, with initial shipments expected in the first half of 2027. The companies plan to make the modems broadly available to the market while also integrating them into their own products and services, extending communications from the seabed to space.

The two companies have a history of collaboration and position themselves as leaders in distributed maritime platforms and resilient radiofrequency communications. The partnership aims to address a persistent gap in the undersea domain, the difficulty of moving reliable communications in and out of the water quickly and remotely.

Under the arrangement, AnySignal will lead development of the core modem and communications technology, drawing on its experience with products including its Terramodem, its flight-proven AstroModem USX terminals, and its AnyLink network orchestration software. The modems will leverage AnySignal's software-defined RF stack, which spans communications, radar, electronic warfare, SIGINT, ELINT, and other sensing applications. Andrenam contributes underwater operating experience, existing government customer relationships, and consistent access to maritime test environments, along with its network of intelligent surface platforms that connect to underwater vehicles and sensors.

The companies plan to extend the acoustic modem into a complete acoustic-to-RF, seabed-to-space communications architecture. Underwater assets would communicate acoustically with distributed surface nodes such as Andrenam's PEARL buoys, where data can be processed locally or routed through resilient satellite and terrestrial networks like AnySignal's AnyLink.

John Malsbury, Co-founder and CEO of AnySignal, said the companies see market demand for a modern, independently available acoustic modem that can be integrated across government, commercial, and autonomous maritime platforms. "AnySignal's thesis was always to extend our network to support missions in all domains," he said, adding that the partnership extends the company's reach from proven space missions into sub-sea operations. Matej Cernosek, Co-Founder and CEO of Andrenam, said the partnership pairs AnySignal's communications experience with Andrenam's PEARL hardware and OBSIDIAN software to move data from undersea sensors and vehicles anywhere in the world in real time. He said the resulting modems are intended to be available well beyond the companies' own platforms and designed for rapid third-party integration.

The companies describe the acoustic modem as the first product from a broader technical partnership. Andrenam's distributed surface platforms can host communications, compute, radar, SIGINT, ELINT, acoustics, electronic warfare, and other payloads, while AnySignal's full stack spans on-orbit radios, ground stations, and global networking. The companies say this creates opportunities for additional distributed maritime sensing and processing products over time.

The next milestone is early modem shipments in the first half of 2027, with further distributed maritime sensing and processing products anticipated as the partnership develops.
